Baking for Relay Even though walkers have completed their laps for this year's Relay for Life, the race has been extended for Barbara Holmes. She is getting a head start on next year's fundraising. The First Zion Baptist Church member bakes sweet potato pies throughout the year to raise money for the cause. "Instead of just asking people for donations, I wanted to try to give them something in return," Holmes explained. She baked more 100 pies to benefit this year's Relay, contributing $812 from her pie proceeds. The baker feels that by participating in her own fundraiser she is making a personal ... |

Dr. Borquaye speaks at Rotary Dr. Seth Borquaye spoke about The Ghanavisions Foundation at Rotary's weekly meeting on Tuesday. Borquaye, an obstetrician, started the organization as a way to further education and health for the people in his native country, Ghana. One of Ghanavisions' programs is "Malaria Be Gone," which aims to put a mosquito net over the head of every Ghanaian. Secretary/Administrative Professional Week This first person you meet when you go to the Liberty County Cooperative Extension Service is Dianne Barnard. She also normally answers the phone when you call. The last four of her 23 years as a secretary have been with the University of Georgia affiliate that doles out advice and information on everything from youth activities to yard pests. Smiley Elementary plants a tree in memory of teacher LUDOWICI -- Teachers and staff at Smiley Elementary planted a red oak in memory of Valerie Futch Smith on April 22. The tree was planted on the new playground, behind the school. A retired teacher read a poem commemorating Smith's life as an educator and friend. "Even though Valerie's life was short, she made a difference in the lives of many teachers, parents and children," Principal Sandy Jones said. "She will truly be missed by all." |
