FPCA Interact Club helps fight cystic fibrosis First Presbyterian Christian Academy Interact Club recently had a dress down day to raise money to combat cystic fibrosis. Each student who gave a donation of $3 or more did not have to wear a uniform that day. Other donations were also solicited. They raised $577, which will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to be used to help find a cure for the disease. Students who helped organize the fundraiser are; Preyen Patel, Joshua Rodgers, Joey Bell, Georgia Bell, Tim Ashmen and Sunny Patel. |

FLE's got talent Although prices keep rising, the cost of a good meal and some exhilarating entertainment has not gone up at Frank Long Elementary School. In fact, for just $4 per person hundreds of parents, students and faculty were able to eat hamburgers and chips, bid on some goody-filled baskets, and enjoy an action-packed show May 2. Dinner kicked off around 5:30, and the show, showcasing some of the students, parents and teachers' talent was launched by Jennifer Avila singing "Start All Over." BPC graduations Saturday MOUNT VERNON -- Brewton-Parker College will hold graduations in both Mount Vernon and Hinesville, May 10. School thanks businesses for support LUDOWICI -- Smiley Elementary School faculty, staff and students recently recognized Altamaha Federal Credit Union for its support of at the school. In the past, the credit union has provided monogrammed bookbags with supplies for new teachers, lunch for staff members during teacher appreciation week and support for students during Red Ribbon Week by participating in "Trunk or Treat." This year, Altamaha Federal has gone farther by also donating $4,160 to help buy playground equipment. Long County High has freshman orientation LUDOWICI -- Long County High School had its freshman orientation this on April 24 in the cafeteria. An estimated 200 parents and upcoming ninth-graders attended. Principal Dr. Delores Mallard welcomed everyone and then Assistant Principal David Edwards gave a slide show on the theme of the night, "Success Is the Only Option." Long Students Participate In Leadership Conference Recently, nine Long County High School students attended a leadership conference in Statesboro. The student-athletes took part in the First District RESA Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Program, Student Athletic Leadership Conference at Georgia Southern University's Paulsen Stadium. The students were Donte Brown, Chris Banks, Ted Turner, Jake Durham, Richard Johnson, Jimmy Bacon, Elizabeth Vandervort, Jessica Bryant and Shelby Mock. STC director speaks about enrollment Terrie Oliver, director of instruction at Savannah Technical College's Liberty Campus, spoke at Tuesday's Rotary meeting. She said enrollment has gone up every semester and the school is trying to branch out and serve all of the community. "We want to retain students and see them go out into the community to get jobs," Oliver said. The Liberty Campus is on Airport Road and offers associate degree programs, diploma programs and technical certificates of credit. Community Action offers scholarship The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority joins with the Georgia Community Action Association in announcing the availability of one $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a Georgia resident currently attending a post secondary school or who has been accepted to one. The individual must be income eligible, in accordance with Community Services Block Grant guidelines, and be successfully judged as a winner in an essay writing competition. GED tests in Jesup The GED tests will be given at Altamaha Technical College's Jesup Campus on Monday and Tuesday, May 5-6, from 5-9 p.m. Registration for testing must be done in person in room 302-B on Monday, April 28, (8 a.m.-noon), Tuesday, April 29, (8 a.m.-noon) or Wednesday, April 30, (8 a.m.-noon or 5-7 p.m.). Registration takes approximately an hour. Candidates for testing must be 18 or older and a picture ID is required. The test fee is $95, payable at registration.
