Hello to the brave men and women of the 3rd Infantry Division,
I have lived in Hinesville and Liberty County ever since the U.S. Army sent me here in 1970. I have seen many changes—from a flight training center primarily teaching Vietnamese pilots, to a post that was right at caretaker status, to the unfurling of the colors of the 24th Infantry, to their being the “Point of the Spear” in Desert Storm to current times. As a county commissioner I was invited by then Commanding General MG Skip Sharp to go over to Bosnia with our current mayor and a half dozen other civilians. Most of us had worn our country’s uniform and we got to see the superb job that was being done on the ground in the Balkans. Those of us who are veterans, retirees, members of the American Legion, VFW, the Vietnam Veterans Association, AUSA, and other groups feel a special connection to you. In our churches here we list our members’ names that are serving and in harm’s way. When we bless our meals we pray for you. When we watch the news we readily identify the Dog-Faced Soldiers that make us so proud.Liberty County/Hinesville is a special place. Our history began with two signers of the Declaration of Independence. One of them, Button Gwinnett, fathered our first state constitution. We are the Children of Pride. At Dorchester Academy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught civil disobedience in the tradition of Thoreau and Ghandi. We are indeed a special place. I don’t think it hyperbole to say we are the center of the universe. And you, you wonderful men and women of the 3rd I.D. make us that way. God bless you and know that we have never been prouder of our troops than we are of you in these trying times.

To our brave men and women of the 3rd Infantry Division.
I would like to thank you all for your selflessness in protecting our country. I know the heartache of losing a loved one. Master SGT Davy Nathaniel Weaver KIA 02-08-1969 - May 18, 2008 Qalat, Afghanistan. His passing was not in vain. Be safe hurry home. Thank you all so very much.
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." - General George S. Patton, Jr
