WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is promising to try to spare more gay troops from being dismissed from the military while the Pentagon takes a year to study revising its "don't ask, don't tell" policy. An announcement of the study, expected Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee, marks a measured step toward President Barack Obama's goal of eliminating the military's policy against gays, which is based on a 1993 law.

Dead soldier identified
A soldier found dead in a barracks on Fort Stewart the night of Jan. 22 has been identified. Pvt. Adam Kiedrowski, 20, was attached to the 87th Combat Service Support Battalion, 3rd ID. Kiedrowski’s unit is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in the next several weeks, said Fort Stewart spokesperson Kevin Larson. Kiedrowski had never deployed, Larson said. The private’s death is still under investigation, but “there doesn’t appear to be foul play,” Larson added. ...
