’Canes and Firebirds tough it out for a tie pre-season game (21-21) The sky was clear, the weather cool, but you could see the steam coming off the helmets as the Hinesville Hurricanes and the Waycross Firebirds strapped on their football gear to open the semi-pro league’s pre-season game at the Gator Bowl on Fort Stewart Saturday night. Both teams battled during a scoreless first quarter. The haphazard offense on both sides made it evident that both offenses were working to clear the cobwebs accumulated over the long off-season. Panthers wrap regular season, spliting two with Savannah Christian The Liberty County Panthers wrapped up the regular season with a double-header Saturday against the Savannah Christian Red Raiders. The Panthers took a 5-4 victory in game one when Paul Davis opened on the mound and pitched for 4-1/3 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs. Eddie Chipple came in for the last 2-2/3 innings for the win. Healthy Kids Day at Y encourages activities Kids jumped, danced, tossed the football, tried out their Hoola Hoop skills and raced in potato sacks during Saturday’s Liberty County Armed Services Family YMCA Healthy Kids Day. The local event coincided with the Y’s nationwide initiative meant to showcase the services provided at the YMCA and to enhance a healthy lifestyle for children. Long County ends year with win LUDOWICI — The Long County High School baseball team ended the year on a positive note Friday with a win over McIntosh County. Tigers set to play top seeded Valdosta of 1-AAAAA The Bradwell High Tigers did something that has not been done in a few years. They made it to the first round of baseball playoffs for region 3-AAAAA. Finishing the regular season with a come-from-behind win against the Groves Rebels helped clinch the number four spot for the Tigers, who ended at 6-15 overall but 7-5 in the region. Lady Ballers’ bring home second from USBA tourney Fort Stewart Youth Sports 12U girls basketball team brought home second place from the USBA Ball N at the Beach Tournmanet in North Myrtle Beach last weekend. The local girls hit the road on Friday for the chance to play teams from North Carolina and South Carolina. “These young ladies play ball year round in Carolina,” coordinator Evelyn Alston said. “Our girls looked good playing against them and we came mighty close to bringing home the championship trophy. Trainer: Eight Belles was not on steroids STANTON (AP) — The trainer of Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles on Tuesday ordered drug testing as part of an the autopsy, intent on dispelling any suggestion the fallen filly may have been on steroids. Bryant to join Pennyman as Tiger NCT Another Bradwell Tiger will join a teammate at North Carolina Tech as Curtis Bryant Jr. signed a scholarship to play football for the Tech Tigers. Bryant will join Vontavious Pennyman, who signed on to the Tech Tigers two weeks ago. The Bradwell student, who played primarily as a weak side linebacker at Bradwell, will have to adjust to his secondary position as a strong safety to cut it at the college level. Coached by Patrick Sammons the victory has the Thunder poised for a chance to steal the crown at the USSSA 11U AA Baseball World Series being held in Pace, Fla., in July. Williams isn’t sure if he can play Game 7 ATLANTA (AP) — Hawks forward Marvin Williams isn’t sure if he’ll be able to play Sunday in the decisive game of Atlanta’s playoff series with the Boston Celtics after spraining his left knee in Game 6. Three counties to participate in 17 Special Olympics Summer Games SAVANNAH — Athletes from Chatham, Liberty and Long counties will compete in the 2008 Special Olympics Georgia Area 17 Summer Games on Wednesday. Opening ceremonies take place at 10:30 a.m. and the games will last until approximately noon. Track and field, and tennis and soccer skills will take place at Savannah Country Day School. But they have proven they can compete with any team, as they narrowly lost to the Savannah Christian Academy’s Raiders 11-12 Tuesday night, which is almost the exact score (10-11) they lost to the Pierce County Bears earlier this month. Waycross Firebirds seek vengeance on Hurricanes The last time James Cox coached and played for a semi-pro football team from Waycross (2000-2001) things were a little rough. “Back then we had another team in Waycross, but the guy who ran it was a ripoff artist,” he said. “Also my team was not any better.
