Hinesville and Riceboro fire departments share grant
Members of the Hinesville Fire Department and Riceboro Volunteer Fire Department had 10,000 reasons to smile recently when state Rep. Al Williams (D-Midway) brought home a $20,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for the two fire companies to split. Each department plans to use their half of the grant to pay for equipment upgrades, but the reach of those needs shows how important funding is for big and little departments alike. Long E-911 Committee hears plans for center nearly complete
LUDOWICI -- The Long County E-911 Committee met on April 30, and GeoComm project manager Ron Bloom said the final modifications and architectural changes for the Wiregrass 911 Long/McIntosh Communication Center in Darien was nearly completed. "We will be having an on-site walk through on May 14, and after that, the plans will be sent to us (GeoComm) for a final review," Bloom said. Safe Kids Day on May 17
The Hinesville Police Department, in conjunction with the Liberty County Health Department, has set Hinesville Safe Kids Day for Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Bradwell Park. The day is for the whole county, is free and open to the public. The park is next to the Liberty County Courthouse. LUDOWICI -- The Long County Pre-Release Center had a Family Reunification Day for inmates soon to be released and their families on April 25. The families met first and did activities to help give them understand what to expect once their loved one was released and back home with them. More arrests at local hotels as MACE sweeps the area
After a string of arrests, some related to prostitution, during a March 28 raid at the San's Inn hotel, the Multi Agency Crack Enforcement Drug Task Force Commander Al Cato said surrounding hotels are cooperating to clean up their businesses. Three weeks after that first sting, the MACE agents went back to work, this time at the Knight's Inn. HPD hopes to close down burglary ring
Search warrants were served last week and Hinesville Police hope to start making arrests for a string of more than 40 residential and business burglaries in April. And the tally could go higher as five more businesses were hit Wednesday and three more homes were burglarized since April 19. HPD head of detectives Maj. BAHAMAS -- The Colorado State University forecast team upgraded its early season forecast Friday at the Bahamas Weather Conference, saying the U.S. Atlantic basin will likely experience a well above-average hurricane season. "Current oceanic and atmospheric trends indicate that we will likely have an active Atlantic basin hurricane season," said William Gray, who is beginning his 25th year forecasting hurricanes at Colorado State. Hospitals asked to conserve blood because of shortage
Donald Lovett, head of the lab at Liberty Regional Medical Center, reports the American Red Cross is urging hospitals to plan ways to cut back on blood use because of a nationwide shortage of type O negative blood. A memo sent to hospitals from the American Red cross Blood Services Southern Region Friday said supplies are "critically low." Lovett echoed the call for help from all donors, but especially those with O negative blood. Firefighters control natural gas leak
County workers snagged a gas pipe Wednesday afternoon while clearing the area where the new justice center will be built, releasing natural gas and requiring assistance from the Hinesville Fire Department. HFD Lt. Mike Alamo explained how the leak happened. "They were cleaning up some stuff and I guess there was a pipe sticking out the ground," Alamo said. New boat helps in search and rescue
A new investment for the Eastern District Volunteer Fire Department is already paying out dividends, according to Chief Joseph Martin. Martin said the department acquired a 26' AMBAR fire rescue boat as surplus from the Coast Guard the first part of this year.  Last Saturday it performed its first solo rescue mission for the department.
