"I'm excited about being over here," the new supertendent said at the Long County Chamber of Commerce bnquet last week. "I look forward to being a part of the Long County School System."
Long County Board of Education Chairman Dempsey Golden said, "I feel the board made the best choice from all of the applicants, looking at all of his qualifications, and his background.
"I think Dr. Waters will do an excellent job for our school system."
Waters replaces Dr. Edwin Pope, who served as superintendent since July 2005.
Waters was selected from a group of 20 educators who applied. He leaves the Tattnall County Schools to take the top position in Long.
Waters was serving as the assistant superintendent in Tattnall County, and had been a part of that system for 20 years.
Waters taught at Glennville High School from 1988-1993. He has also served as an assistant principal and principal at Glennville Elementary School and Glennville Middle School.
While serving in the administrative area of the system, Waters held the positions as parent involvement coordinator, Title 1 director and director of human resources.
The superintendent also brings in experience as a coach, having been the head baseball coach, assistant football coach, and assistant/head girls basketball coach.
Waters' contract with Long County begins July 1 and runs through June 2009. The annual salary is $123,000.
Waters holds a bachelor's of arts degree in history and a master's in education from Georgia Southern University. He also brings a doctorate in education with a level even specialty in administrative supervision from the University of Sarasota.
Waters has been married to Tammie DeLoach Waters for 28 years, and they have two sons, Christopher 18, and Andrew, 14. The superintendent is an ordained deacon and member of the First Baptist Church of Glennville.
Though Waters contract doesn't officially start until July, he began working this past week in Long County.
